High-precision optical clocks are based on electronic transitions in atoms, ions and molecules and, in addition to important technical applications, also enable searches for physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. The lecture explains in the style of a tutorial some basic working principles of optical clocks and the hardware used (e.g. acousto-optical modulators) as well as applied spectroscopic techniques (e.g. electron shelving).
