GREEPHON | Greening quantum nanophotonics - one lab at a time
GREEPHON is a sustainability initiative funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and hosted in the group of Prof Arno Rauschenbeutel at the Physics Institute of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The project explores practical pathways to reduce the energy consumption and the environmental footprint of photonics and quantum technology research.
Our work focuses on:
- Mapping and analysing resource consumption in selected research laboratories working at the cutting edge of quantum optics and integrated nanophotonics.
- Developing strategies and tools to lower energy use, materials waste, and emissions connected to the research activities.
- Supporting researchers and technical staff in adopting more efficient and sustainable practices in their daily operation.
- Building a cross-disciplinary network that connects universities, industry, and policy actors around sustainable quantum photonic technologies.
The project combines scientific expertise, data-driven methodologies, and the collaboration of professionals across academia — including laboratory managers, administrative staff, sustainability officers, and institutional services — together with external partners from Berlin’s research and innovation ecosystem. Its goal is to create actionable and scalable solutions that contribute to more sustainable research infrastructures and future technologies.
