Abstract

Solid-state lasers based on rare-earth doped crystals emit at wavelengths from the UV to the mid-infrared range. However, the narrow emission lines of rare earth ions limit the achievable laser wavelengths range severely and impose restrictions on the achievable modelocked pulse duration. High (average) power lasers require gain materials with good thermo-mechanical properties and strong crystal fields are often detrimental for visible lasers. In my talk I will present how the development and growth of laser materials with properties tailored for the desired application can circumvent these issues and enable solid-state lasers with unprecedented operation parameters at wavelengths in the visible, infrared, and mid-infrared range.
