SUMMARY:21.05.2026 - Dr. Michael Moll (CERN): Radiation Damage to Low Gain
Avalanche Diodes (LGADs) – The Gain Layer Project

DESCRIPTION:Arstract: Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) are a class of
silicon sensors designed to provide moderate internal signal amplification
(typically a factor of 10-30) through controlled charge multiplication. T
hey incorporate a highly doped gain layer that creates a high electric-fie
ld region\, where charge carriers undergo impact ionization\, resulting in
signal amplification.\nThe combination of moderate gain with fast signal
rise time enables particle time resolutions on the order of ~30 ps\, makin
g LGADs ideal for timing applications. They will be employed in the upcomi
ng LHC Phase II precision timing detectors of the ATLAS and CMS experiment
s at CERN. In these environments\, the sensors are exposed to high radiati
on fields\, which inevitably lead to significant radiation damage. Althoug
h LGADs have been optimized for radiation hardness using defect-engineerin
g techniques\, they still suffer from performance degradation\, primarily
due to radiation-induced deactivation of the gain-layer. “he “Gain Lay
er Project” aims to improve the understanding of the physics mechanisms
underlying the degradation.\nThe presentation will introduce the LGAD conc
ept and its application domains\, and the main design variations. The fund
amentals of radiation damage to silicon detectors will be discussed\, alon
g with the characterization techniques used to identify the microscopic de
fects responsible for the observed macroscopic degradation.\nIn the second
part\, radiation damage in LGADs will be addressed in more detail\, and t
he Gain Layer Project will be presented. This project focuses on achieving
a deeper understanding of the defect-kinetics governing the gain-layer de
 gradation under irradiation.
