Studien zur Signalextraktion elektroschwacher Top-Quark-Produktion bei ATLAS

In this thesis various tools used in analyses of proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. A software for fast and efficient reduction of data and Monte Carlo samples has been developed. A kinematic fit is used in order to separate events with electroweakly produced single top quarks from background. The selection of events in the 2011 data set, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.66 fb−1 at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, is restricted to two jets and one electron or muon in the final state. The cross section of the t-channel single top quark production is then obtained by a multi-template fit. The implementation of this fit is included in two software packages BILL and BAT, which are presented. The results obtained by these tools are compared to each other. In addition a new framework independent tool for evaluating the systematic uncertainty introduced by the parton-density functions was developed and is documented in this thesis.
