Abstract: The European Strategy for Particle Physics identified an high-energy e+e- collider studying the Higgs boson as the next priority collider project. The different proposals to realize such a collider all reach a similar performance on the core Higgs program at 250 GeV, albeit with different choices of luminosity and polarisation - but they differ in capabilities at lower and higher energies. This talk will review the physics capabilities of future e+e- linear colliders in the Higgs sector and beyond, with a specific emphasis illuminating the interplay of the top-level beam parameters luminosity, energy and polarisation.

Abstract : Particle cascades originating from quarks and gluons decays (jets) are omnipresent in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The identification of jet flavours is essential for many physics searches at the ATLAS experiment. This is achieved using machine learning algorithms (taggers) which combine tracks and jets information to determine the flavour of the jets ($b$-jets, $c$-jets and light jets). These taggers are trained with simulated Monte Carlo events and, due to simulations imperfections, their performance need to be measured in data in order to extract correction factors for the simulation predictions. ATLAS developed a set of calibration techniques for different jets flavours to correct, then the correction factors need to be re-derived every time a new tagger is deployed. Automating the calibration workflow significantly accelerates the calibration cycle and makes it less prone to manual mistakes. We present the first automated calibration framework in ATLAS using REANA platform. The results are compared with the official results using 36.2 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of 13 TeV collisions data from ATLAS, and a new set of calibration results with a customised setup is also included. The same method can be applied in other contexts to reduce the amount of time and resources needed to achieve the scientific goals.

12.04.2019 - Cosimo Nigro (DESY): Towards open and reproducible multi-instrument analysis in gamma-ray astronomy



Analysis and combination of data from different gamma-ray instruments involves the use of collaboration proprietary software and case-by-case methods. By defining a common open format for high-level gamma-ray data (containing event lists and instrument response functions, using the FITS standard) we allow multi-instrument analysis within the context of open-source software. This project aims to perform the first fully-reproducible, multi-instrument very-high-energy gamma-ray analysis. Data of Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, H.E.S.S., and FACT, compliant with a preliminary common format (DL3) and analysed with the gammapy science tools, were used to produce a first joint fit of the Crab Nebula spectrum. Aspects of the error evaluation and the release format of a spectral measurement are also included in the discussion. The talk will illustrate how to realize a fully reproducible publication relying on open access assets as GitHub repositories (https://github.com/open-gamma-ray-astro/joint-crab) and will promote and review current open data format and science tools to allow VHE gamma-ray astronomy to move towards open reproducible science.

Constraints on selected mediator-based dark matter models and a scalar dark energy model using  13 TeV pp collisions collected by the ATLAS detector during the years 2015-2016 are summarised in this talk. The searches presented are sensitive to spin-1 leptophobic and leptophilic mediators, spin-0 colour-neutral and colour-charged mediators and vector or pseudo-scalar mediators embedded in extended-Higgs sector models. The results are also presented  in terms of constraints to light scalar particles that could contribute to the accelerating expansion of the observable universe (dark energy).

Abstract: The EDELWEISS-III collaboration is operating an experiment for the direct detection of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMPs) dark matter in the low radioactivity environment of the Modane Underground Laboratory. It consists of 24 advanced FID germanium detectors operating at 18 mK in a dilution refrigerator in order to identify eventual rare nuclear recoils induced by elastic scattering of WIMPs from our Galactic halo. The current EDELWEISS-III program, including improvements of the background, data-acquisition and the current installation will be detailed. Sources of background along with the rejection method with the FID detectors will be discussed. Detector performances and a first low WIMP mass BDT-based analysis of data acquired in a long-term campaign will be presented as well. The FID detector technology is not limited to EDELWEISS-III but can be further employed in the next generation of cryogenic detector experiments.
