Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät - Experimentelle Elementarteilchenphysik

Z0-Resonanz Praktikum (english)

Deutsche Version

Arbeitsgruppe Experimentelle Elementarteilchenphysik I
Institut für Physik

Attention:  The booking has to be done at least one week before the desired date. Later bookings must be canceled.

The experiment is reserved for groups of maximum 2 people. Please note this experiment will primarily be taught in English.

Knowledge in the field of particle physics (lecture Kern- und Elementarteilchenphysik) is a basic requirement. Basic knowledge of Python is an advantage for successful results.

Tutor

R D Parsons, daniel.parsons@physik.hu-berlin.de

(room 1.312)

Please contact the tutor by e-mail after booking on Kleinstein to arrange the exact meeting point and meeting time for the start of the experiment (Kleinstein does not notify the tutor automatically.)

Hints

The experiment makes use of data recorded with the particle detector L3 at the e+e--accelerator LEP at the European Research Center for Particle Physics CERN in Geneva 1993. It allows to have a basic overview of the field of work of a particle physicist and to familiarize with the latest analysis methods.

The Praktikum takes place in front of a computer. Please read the literature below carefully and familiarize yourself with the software. Knowledge regarding the following topics is also necessary:

  1. Interaction of particles and matter

  2. Working principle of detectors

  3. Relativistic kinematics

  4. Electroweak coupling

The evaluation will be done with the help of a Python notebook. Basic knowledge of programming is therefore an advantage, otherwise it is expected that the necessary skills are developed independently.

Literature

The following literature should be read before the experiment

  1. Overview: Chapter 4 (neutral currents)  of the lecture Experimentelle Elementarteilchenphysik (ps File, pdf File )

  2. L3-experiment: O. Adrinai et al., Results from the L3 Experiment at LEP, Physics Reports 236(1993)1;

(especially Chapter 2 and Chapter 5)

  3.  H. Schopper, Die Ernte nach einem Jahr LEP-Betrieb, Physikalische Blätter 47(1991)907

  4.  M. Grünewald und T. Hebbecker, Teilchenphysik am e+e--Speicherring LEP, Physikalische Blätter 51(1995)837

Materials and Report

The instructions, the datasets and the code used for the experiment are available as a tar-file here. Copy this file into your directory and unzip it.

The analysis scripts provided in this package are primarily written in python, and is provided as an jupyter notebook.

Useful Links:

  1. Linux-tutorial (especially tutorial 1 and 2)

  2. Python-tutorial

  3. Python-CodeAcademy

  4. Jupyter notebook tutorial

In order to use this notebook an installation of the following python packages is required:

  • ipython
  • jupyter
  • matplotlib
  • scipy

Performing the Experiment

Due to the ongoing closure of university facilities due to the COVID-19 crisis in person demonstration of this practical will not be possible. Instead all supervision will be provided by conference calls over zoom (details to be provided close to the meeting time).

The analysis of the data can be performed on your own computer, instructions and assistance for this will be provided.

Completing the Report

Please hand in the experimental report as a pdf file and the completed jupyter notebook to the tutor by e-mail no later than two weeks after the test has been carried out!
