Ultra-thin layers

Surface- and interface effects in spin and charge transport are studied in ultra- thin to thin layered material systems of (magnetic) metals, semiconductors, superconductors and the novel materials class of topological insulators. We investigate thin epitaxial layers prepared by exfoliation technique and atomically-thin novel material layer systems such as ferecrystals. Investigations of the transport properties of topological insulators, semiconductor/superconductor hybrids or metal/semiconductor hybrids are performed with respect to the influence of electrical fields, low- and high-magnetic fields and temperature. We are particularly interested in topological surface states, phase transitions to emergent phenomena (superconductivity, charge-density waves) and proximity effects at hybrid interfaces. Materials presently under investigation are novel oxide (Ga2O3), topological insulator (Bi2Se3,...) and ferecrystal (PbSe/NbSe2, SnSe/VSe2,...) based ultra-thin layers.
