On Wednesday, 28/11/2012 there will be a seminar talk, given by Prof. Dmitry Postnov (Saratov State University, Russia). The topic is: "Conducted vasoreactivity: The dynamical point of view".

Abstract:

We address the problem of endothelium mediated conducted vasodilation. By means of functional modeling we test the hypothesized mechanisms of regenerative transmission of electric pulses along endothelial cell layer paving the inside of all blood vessels. Basing ourself on known experimental and modeling studies, we focus on possible nonlinear mechanisms that can underlie the regenerative pulse transmission (RPT). While endothelial cells (EC) are known as electrically inexcitable, the possible role of ECs in RPT mechanisms are not evident. However, at certain time scales there is indirect experimental evidence of bistable behavior of the EC membrane potential. We show that this kind of nonlinear systems can infact the occurance of RPT. By means of quantitative mathematical modeling we estimate the possible contribution of specific ionic currents to the suggested RPT mechanism.
