Title: A complex network approach to describe living neuronal cultures

The brain can fulfill complex tasks, so it comes as no surprise that its structure has been described as a complex network. But how does the topology of neuronal connections shape the collective dynamics that contain and process information? This question is at the heart of theoretical neuroscience. We approach this problem mathematically with a method to calculate the mean activity of large complex networks of simple neurons. An interesting result is that basic statistical features such as heterogeneity and connectivity correlations may have a large impact on signal processing. Hence, these features are likely to play a significant role in the wiring strategy of the developing cortex, as well as cultures grown in the laboratory.
