Seminar - Science & Pretzels

The last Science & Pretzels of 2018 will have a special format: Kirsten Thonicke and a team from the International Research Training Group (IRTG) 1740 will present:

Complex Networks Approach for the Earth System: Challenges & Results

on Wednesday, 12th December, at 3.00 pm in the Big Cupola, A31.

PIK has been involved in the DFG-International Research Training Group (IRTG) with Brazil since 2011. The School has brought together researchers from the internationally well-known institutions INPE and USP and set up a fruitful collaboration on a common topic, Dynamic Phenomena in Complex Networks. Its application has helped to improve our understanding climate dynamics in South America, the role of moisture recycling of the Amazon rainforest, but also involves topics around stochastic dynamics and transport as well as neural networks. Now in the middle of the second phase of the IRTG, established scientific collaborations have not only allowed PhD students to visit partner institutions in Brazil but are now also leading to synthesis papers. We will provide an overview of the IRTG activities and the current PIK doctoral candidates Catrin Ciemer, Frederik Wolf, and Maximilian Gelbrecht will present their research activities in short talks.

As it's nearly Christmas, we will finish up with some drinks and Stollen instead of the usual pretzels!

Science & Pretzels are monthly seminars which are part of PIK's interdisciplinary PhD programme. Leading scientists of the PIK community give a talk on their work or a theme of interest, followed by a discussion and a social get-together with pretzels and drinks. Participation is not limited to PhD students, but please register to participate (science-and-pretzels@pik-potsdam.de) giving your name, affiliation, and status (PhD student, intern, etc.). You will get a confirmation by email. Registration will be kept open until 2 pm on Monday 10th December.
