Electromagnetically induced transparency experiments in cesium vapor—Towards single photon operation

We describe first results with an experimental setup designed to store light pulses of ultra low intensity inside a cesium vapor cell by employing the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency. A phase-locked laser system is used as pump and probe laser and probe laser pulses of Gaußian shape are delayed by up to 280 ns. We outline the route to single photon operation of the setup, in particular by introducing a novel filtering concept.
