Effective Field Theory: from the Standard Model to New Physics (Module P25.1.a)
Effective Field Theories (EFTs) are an essential tool for the modern-day particle physicists. EFTs are used to organise our knowledge and to parametrise our ignorance. Indeed, not only they allow to describe physical regimes retaining only the relevant information, but they are also necessary in the context of perturbation theory when several energy scales (known or unknown) are involved. These lectures will provide an introduction and overview of the most common and relevant EFTs, from the Fermi theory to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory, and cover important aspects such as matching and renormalisation group effects. The exercise sessions are meant to provide examples of how EFTs and related techniques are used everyday in the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model.
News:
First exercise session on Wednesday October 29, 2025 from 3:15pm to 4:45pm on Zoom. Please connect on https://desy.zoom.us/j/63379025366 (Meeting ID: 633 7902 5366 , Passcode: first 5 digits of Pi). Due to disturbance both on the long distance trains between Hamburg and Berlin and also on the S-Bahn lines within Berlin, there won't be any other lecture this week. The first lecture in person will take place Wednesday November 5, 2025 at 1:15pm (NEW14 1.09).
