Dysphoria

Dysphoria refers to the mental distress that arises when the gender perceived by others or one's own body image does not match one's own gender identity. Gender dysphoria was introduced in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5 in 2013 to replace the negatively charged term gender identity disorder. However, the continued definition of dysphoria as a mental illness is criticised by some, as it contributes to the ongoing stigmatisation and pathologisation of trans* identity.
