Pathologisation
Pathologisation means that a person's identity, body, sensations, perceptions or relationships - contrary to their own perception - are described as ‘pathological’ or ‘disturbed’ because they deviate from the medical or social norm.
In this way, lsbtiq* people have been and still are sometimes pathologised by having their identities, bodies or behaviours listed as mental or physical illnesses in medical classifications such as the ICD (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems).
The term ‘pathologisation’ indicates that, under the guise of (supposed) medical neutrality or fact-finding, negative assessments are made that are actually based on changeable - and often discriminatory - social norms and support them at the same time.
