Using Protons to Accelerate Electrons - the Key is Plasma
  • When May 07, 2024 from 03:00 to 05:00
  • iCal

Prof. Dr. Allen Caldwell (Direktor am Max-Planck-Institut in München) will talk about:

AWAKE (Advanced Proton Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment)

Abstract

As protons travel through the plasma, they initiate oscillations of the plasma, creating a wave that can be surfed by trailing electrons. The electrons pick up energy from the plasma wave, and, in this way, can be accelerated to high energies in much shorter distances than with conventional acceleration techniques. The AWAKE experiment at CERN has successfully demonstrated this process. I will discuss the physics of plasma wakefield acceleration with protons, the realization in AWAKE, and the future outlook for using this technology to build energy frontier particle colliders.

The Colloquium will be held in "hybrid" format, i.e., you can join the talk in the lecture hall or via zoom.
