Department Colloquium: Prof. Dr. Hartmut Wittig, (Institute for Nuclear Physics, PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence and Helmholtz Institute Mainz) talks about this topic:
The puzzles of the muon anomalous magnetic moment
Abstract
For many years, the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon has provided one of the most promising hints for a quantitative failure of the Standard Model, hinting at the possibility of new physics. However, recent lattice QCD calculations have challenged this scenario, by providing estimates for the crucial hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution which deviate significantly from the traditional data-driven evaluation, while being compatible with the direct experimental measurement. In this talk I review the current status of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and describe the enormous progress that has been achieved in computing the contributions from the strong interaction in lattice QCD.
The Colloquium will be held in "hybrid" format, i.e., you can join the talk in the lecture hall or via zoom.
