Bachelor's Thesis
Information on the Bachelor's thesis can also be found on the website of the Physics Examination Office.
Registration of a Bachelor's Thesis
- Check the information page on Bachelor's Theses for currently announced topics. Further information on the topics can be obtained via the respective contact addresses. You are free to inquire directly about additional topics with the research groups of the institute.
- Contact the respective supervisor. Clarify whether the topic is available and agree on the processing period, the suggestion for the second examiner, and other modalities.
- Mono-Bachelor: Admission to the Bachelor's thesis is possible after achieving at least 120 credit points.
- Combined Bachelor: Admission to the Bachelor's thesis is possible after successful completion of modules Pk 1 – Pk 3, P
- Fill out the form Application for Admission to the Thesis (form on the Examination Office website) and submit it to the Examination Office. From the date listed on the form under “Date of Topic Assignment,” you have exactly 4 (Mono-Bachelor) or 3 months (Combined Bachelor) until submission.
Conducting a Bachelor's Thesis – Deadlines
- Mono-Bachelor: The Bachelor's thesis comprises 10 credit points, i.e., a workload of 360 hours. After registration, exactly 18 weeks are available for completion.
- Combined Bachelor: The Bachelor's thesis comprises 10 credit points, i.e., a workload of 300 hours. After registration, exactly 3 months are available for completion.
- It is recommended to use the lecture-free period (preferably between the 5th and 6th semester) fully or partially for working on the thesis.
- The Bachelor's program should be completed by the end of the 6th semester, i.e., the thesis should be submitted and graded by then.
- Under certain conditions, provisional enrollment in the Master's program is possible for one semester even without a Bachelor's degree. Usually, registration for all module exams should exist. Ms. Voigt, Physics Examination Office, issues a certificate of previously earned credits to be presented to the registration office for provisional enrollment.
- Please note that admission to other Master's programs (e.g., abroad) may have different registration deadlines and requirements. Align your thesis work accordingly.
Writing a Bachelor's Thesis
A guide to the Bachelor's thesis in Physics is available on the Examination Office website. In any case, the thesis should be written in close discussion with the respective primary supervisor.
Submitting a Bachelor's Thesis
The Bachelor's theses must be submitted in triplicate to the Examination Office.
Defending a Bachelor's Thesis
The defense of a Bachelor's thesis takes place in the form of a presentation followed by a discussion. It is recommended to limit the presentation to 20 minutes and the questioning to 10 minutes. The primary examiner is the first supervisor. The presence of the second examiner is recommended.
Extension of the Thesis Processing Period
A Bachelor's thesis can, in justified cases, be extended by a maximum of 6 weeks (Mono-Bachelor) or 4 weeks (Combined Bachelor) upon request. This corresponds to 1/4 of the total processing time. The request must be submitted in time, i.e., for the same period for which an extension is requested before the original submission deadline.
Further Regulations
If you aim to complete an external thesis (outside the institute), your external supervisor should act as the second examiner. The first supervisor must belong to the Institute of Physics. Exceptions are decided by the Examination Board upon request. Supervision by examiners not registered at the Institute of Physics must always be approved by the Examination Board.
Further legally binding regulations for the Bachelor's thesis can be found in the study and examination regulations.
