Information on the Master Thesis can also be found on the Physics Examination Office website.

Registration of a Master Thesis

  • Check the information page Master Theses for currently announced topics. Further information on the topics can be obtained via the contact addresses provided. You are free to inquire about additional topics directly with the research groups of the institute.
  • Contact the respective supervisor. Clarify whether the topic is available and agree on the period of work, the proposal for the second examiner, and other modalities.
  • Master of Science: Registration for the Master Thesis is possible after successful completion of modules P21, P27, and P28. Complete the form Application for Admission to the Thesis (form on the Examination Office website) and submit it to the Examination Office. From the date indicated on the form under “Date of Topic Assignment,” you have exactly 6 months until submission.

Submission of a Master Thesis

The Master Thesis must be submitted in three copies to the Examination Office.

Defense of a Master Thesis

The defense of a Master Thesis takes place in the form of a colloquium on the results of the thesis, followed by a discussion. The duration of the questioning should be limited to 30 minutes. It is recommended to limit the presentation to 30 minutes. Examiners are the two thesis supervisors. In justified cases, upon request to the Examination Board, the second examiner for the defense may differ from the second supervisor of the thesis.

Extension of the Processing Period for a Master Thesis

A Master Thesis can, in justified cases, be extended by a maximum of ¼ of the total processing time (i.e., 1.5 months) upon request. The request must be submitted in a timely manner, i.e., the same period for which an extension is requested before the original submission deadline.

Implementation of the Master Thesis – Deadlines (Mono-Master)

Master of Science – The Master Thesis comprises 30 credit points, i.e., a workload of 900 hours. After registration for the Master Thesis, exactly 6 months are available for completion. It is recommended to align the studies early on with the planned Master Thesis.

Master of Education – The specific modalities for implementation and deadlines can be found in the respective Study and Examination Regulations.

Further Regulations

If you plan to write an external thesis (outside the institute), your external supervisor should act as the second examiner. The first supervisor must belong to the Institute of Physics. Exceptions are decided by the Examination Board upon request. Supervision by examiners who are not registered as such at the Institute of Physics must always be approved by the Examination Board.

Further legally binding regulations regarding the Master Thesis can be found in the Study and Examination Regulations.
