High-D: R&D for highly-segmented multi-dimensional detectors for future experiments (funded by BMBF)
Future accelerator-based experiments at the energy as well as at the intensity frontier for Higgs-boson precision
measurements and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model as well as for the study pf the gluon-quark plasma and the exploration of the QCD phase diagram require a novel generation of high-precision detectors of unprecedented spatial, time and energy resolution. The requirements on such 5-dimensional (5D) measurements can only be achieved by combining detectors with extreme granularity and using new reconstruction techniques. A higher segmentation is achieved by novel microelectronics technologies, novel semi-conductor designs, new segmentation concepts, and novel readout electronics. These developments at the detector side require novel algorithms that exploit efficiently the provided 5D information and that go beyond the individual detector by complementing all detector components in order to guarantee optimal precision at the reconstruction level.
