Two-day experiment, Tuesdays + Thursdays, 9–17 (c.t.)
- Day 1:
- Commissioning of the detector, setup of the trigger system and calibration, start of the measurement. The measurement runs for at least 24 hours.
- Day 2:
- Computer-assisted statistical evaluation of the measurement data.
Please be informed that this course is in English.
General description
In this experiment, the lifetime of the muon is measured using muons from cosmic radiation. The handling of detectors for particle radiation and the associated readout electronics as well as the statistical evaluation of the data obtained should be practiced.
The experiment requires the following knowledge (see instructions for details): basics of weak interaction, interaction of particles with matter, functioning of particle detectors, electronics and statistics.
The test preparation is reasonably extensive. This should be taken into account when choosing the date.
IMPORTANT: If you do not prepare properly, the experiment cannot be carried out and must be repeated on another day. This also applies to the tasks to be completed in preparation for the experiment.
For statistical evaluation on Day 2, you should write your own analysis code in any programming language which is more convenient for you.
literature
The experiment instructions are available as a PDF-File file. This contains a list of suggested literature for the preparation of the experiment. Literature can be borrowed from the library. It is not necessary to collect additional materials.
Please read these and the experiment instructions and the literature specified there (essentially Leo's book) carefully before beginning the experiment.
There is a Jupyternotebook available which assist you for statistical evaluation of the measurement data.
