Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Dr. Caterina Cocchi (Department of Physics, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) will speak about "Light-matter interaction at the nanoscale: Optical properties of materials from first principles".
Abstract
In this lecture I am going to show the predictive power of first-principles methods to describe light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. With the aid of two examples from my current research I will discuss the main challenges of these approaches and illustrate their capability to describe and rationalize optical properties of any material. I will do so by considering optical nonlinearities in photo-absorbing molecules under intense laser irradiation, and by investigating electron-hole pairs in van der Waals heterostructures.
