Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Dr. Arno Rauschenbeutel (Department of Physics, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) will speak about "Glass Fiber Quantum Optics".
Abstract
Glass fibers play an important role for guiding and controlling light in many areas of everyday life: Owing to their enormous capacity for data transmission, they have become the backbone of the modern information society. Moreover, they are highly relevant in medicine and industry. In view of this widespread and successful use of glass fiber technology, it may come as a surprise that the design and optimization of novel types of glass fibers for new applications is an ever-growing field of research. In this context, we employ specially designed glass fibers as quantum laboratories. More precisely, we interface atoms or molecules which are located near the surface of ultra-thin glass fibers with photons that are guided through the latter. The strong spatial confinement in these so-called optical nanofibers enhances the atom-photon interaction. The resulting efficient coupling of fiber-guided light with quantum emitters opens a number of perspectives, both for carrying out basic studies and for implementing novel types of fiber-optical components, required for quantum communication, quantum cryptography, and for quantum information processing.
