Prof. Kurt Aulenbacher (Institut für Kernphysik der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz) will talk about:

Particle physics at the MESA accelerator

Abstract

The Mainz Energy-recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) is a high intensity electron accelerator producing spin-polarized beams in the 100 MeV range. The P2-experiment will use a longitudinally polarized beam on a liquid hydrogen target at a luminosity of 1039cm-2 s-1. It will enable a precision determination of the electro-weak mixing angle, qW , at low momentum transfer where the observable is very sensitive to new physics effects.  As a second experimental approach, the MAGIX-experiment will use windowless gas targets and spectrometers. The low density of such targets will be compensated by an increased beam intensity which is enabled by the so-called energy-recovery linac- (ERL-) mode of MESA. A suite of experiments ranging from dark matter searches to measurements of astrophysical cross sections and nuclear form factors will become possible. The talk will illustrate these new experimental techniques and the goals of the experimental program.

The Colloquium will be held in "hybrid" format, i.e., you can join the talk in the lecture hall or via zoom.
