Symposium
Symposium on "Fire and land-use change in Brazil" at PIK
on May 2nd from 10:00 until 13:00 in the Big Cupola in A31. We are very happy to welcome Prof. Dr. Britaldo Soares-Filho and Dr. Ubijara Oliveira from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, who are leading experts in the assessment of policy impacts on climate, fire and land-use. Programme:
At 10 am Prof. Soares-Filho will give a talk on "Environmental modeling in support of sound policy development".
Dr. Oliveira will then follow and give a talk on "Modeling fire in the Cerrado Biome".
We will resume the symposium with an overview talk on "Influence of climate and land-use on fire regimes in Brazil's biomes" presented by Kirsten Thonicke, Markus Drüke, Ana Cano-Crespo and Marie Brunel.
Between the talks we plan to have time for discussions.
Short Bio:
Prof. Dr. Britaldo Soares-Filho is a leading expert in environmental modeling applied to policy design and evaluation of policy choices. He and his collaborators work on the assessment of the impact of policy scenarios on climate and land-use change, fire, river hydrology and the carbon balance in Brazil and specifically in the Brazilian Amazon. He is a leading expert on REDD+, Brazil's Forestry Code and other policies to reduce tropical deforestation.
Dr. Oliveira's research focuses on biogeography, macroecology, biodiversity and fire modelling. In his talk, he will describe FISC-Cerrado, a high spatial resolution fire-spreading model for the entire Brazilian Cerrado Biome. This model incorporates vegetation physiognomies, climate seasonality, fuel loads and other landscape features to simulate the propagation of fire in near-real time. The simulations are being used to help managing and fighting fire in key conservation units of the Cerrado.
