Preparatory Math Course

Preparatory Mathematics Course for Prospective First-Year Students

The Institute of Physics at Humboldt University Berlin offers a preparatory mathematics course (“Math Course”) in September 2025. Deficiencies in mathematics, for example caused by pandemic-related distance and alternating instruction, are to be identified and compensated for in this course.

Target Group

The preparatory course is aimed at future first-semester students at HU in the fields of Physics and IMP. Students from other disciplines (e.g., Chemistry) are also welcome if there are enough free places available. Registration for the course is required.

To decide whether participation in the preparatory course is advisable for you, our self-assessment tasks can be helpful (see below).

Format

The two-week course will take place from

September 8 – September 19, 2025

During ten days, 90 minutes of lecture followed by 135 minutes of exercises in smaller groups will be offered. The course covers selected and relevant chapters of school mathematics at the beginning of studies, as provided in the Berlin state curriculum for advanced mathematics courses.

The mathematics preparatory course will take place on-site at the Adlershof campus of HU Berlin.

Registration

To register, please enroll in this Moodle course.

Please note that the number of participants is limited to about 50.

Self-Assessment Tasks

We have created some self-assessment tasks. If you are unsure whether you want (or should) participate in the preparatory course, work on these tasks and compare your results with ours or with the sample solutions.

If you have difficulties solving the tasks, attending the preparatory course is recommended.
